The CEVA-MM3000 is the Industry’s Most Powerful, Fully Programmable, Multipurpose Video, ISP, and Vision Platform

ceva_3000Today’s state-of-the-art mobile devices (smartphones, tablet computers, portable media players, portable gaming consoles) and home entertainment devices (HDTVs, STBs, Blu-ray players, media servers) are required to perform a tremendous variety of compute-intensive video, Image Signal Processing (ISP), and vision tasks. Due to increasing media consumption over the net and the rise of cloud-based applications, these tasks demand a high degree of flexibility, supporting various video formats and intelligent video processing in real-time.

The CEVA-MM3000 is a unique, fully programmable, heterogeneous multi-core platform that is dedicated to addressing the extreme computational needs of the most sophisticated multimedia applications. The CEVA-MM3000 offers a scalable solution (number and type of processor cores, type and size of memories) that can support a wide variety of products and use-cases.

By off-loading the device’s main CPU and replacing multiple hardwired accelerators for performance-intensive video, ISP, and vision processing tasks, the highly-efficient CEVA-MM3000 dramatically reduces the power consumption of the overall system, while providing complete flexibility in terms of video standards, ISP functions, and vision applications. Significantly, designers can leverage the CEVA-MM3000’s programmable architecture to implement their own proprietary software, thereby addressing unique use-cases and providing exceptional functionality that truly differentiates their products.

The CEVA-MM3000 comprises a fully-programmable hardware platform (no hardwired accelerators that are “frozen in silicon”), a complete set of optimized multimedia codecs and ISP functions, and a comprehensive development environment including an optimizing C compiler, debugger, and hardware development boards. CEVA also provides an entire ecosystem in the form of the CEVAnet Partner Program, which leverages industry-leading technology providers who collaborate with CEVA to offer a comprehensive list of offerings based around the CEVA-MM3000.

The CEVA-MM3000 is a single solution that addresses all high-end video, ISP, and vision requirements for applications such as full HD video decoding and encoding on the same platform, full HD video conferencing, video transcoding from any standard to any standard, the image pipeline, pre- and post- processing for image and video enhancement, and video analytics and vision applications including object, face, and gesture detection and recognition. The CEVA-MM3000 supports the toughest use-cases typical in smartphones, tablets, DTVs, STBs, and other connected devices.

Architectural Highlights

The CEVA-MM3000 utilizes a heterogeneous, multi-core architecture. At the heart of the platform are two specialized processor types – a Stream Processor and a Vector Processor. The Stream Processor is responsible for bit stream coding, bit stream manipulation, and system control code execution. The Vector Processor performs filtering and the vector-type operations required for pixel processing. Both processor types are designed for ease of programmability and are supported by an optimizing C-compiler and application profiler.

To efficiently meet the precise requirements of a wide range of portable multimedia and home entertainment applications, the number of Stream and Vector Processors (also the type and size of the memories) can be configured to address each specific use-case so as to achieve the optimal balance of performance and efficiency. The Stream and Vector processors are combined into a complete multi-core system that also includes local and shared memories, peripherals, DMA, and standard bridges to external busses. This comprehensive, highly-efficient multi-core platform was specifically designed to meet the low-power requirements of mobile and home entertainment devices.
